Getting Back Out There: Karen's Story Part II
By: Karen Phillips
In 2019, I shared my journey from being a physical therapy patient with chronic back pain to becoming an employee at Four Pines Physical Therapy. Now, I’m excited to update you on my continued progress—because wow, what a difference time, commitment, and physical therapy can make!
I recently saw an ad with the headline “Getting Back Out There,” and it struck a chord with me. It featured a man backpacking, and although the ad was about spine surgery, I related to the message differently. I’ve been on a journey to get my body back to doing the things I love, without surgery. Instead, I used physical therapy and a newfound commitment to strength training and healthy movement.

Rediscovering My Strength
When I first arrived at Four Pines Physical Therapy as a patient, I was struggling with spinal stenosis, scoliosis, and significant pain. Walking and standing straight felt impossible, and even daily tasks like gardening and walking my dog were beyond my reach. I was in a dark place emotionally, not sure if I’d ever return to the outdoor activities I loved—kayaking, fishing, hiking.
Fast forward to today, and not only can I do those things, but I’ve taken up new hobbies! I discovered a love for running and weightlifting—something I never thought possible. These activities, along with the guidance from my therapists at Four Pines, have completely transformed how I move, live, and think about my body.
Reaching My Therapy Goals
When I started my physical therapy journey, I set a goal to hike into Bailey Lake for an overnight stay. At the time, it seemed impossible. But with each therapy session and every strength training workout, I inched closer to that goal. And I’m thrilled to say I did it! I hiked to Bailey Lake with a 31-pound pack on my back. I also ran my first 5k race, and deadlifted 90 lbs. These accomplishments are milestones on a road I once feared I’d never walk.

Overcoming Setbacks
The journey hasn’t been without setbacks. There were moments of pain, frustration, and doubt, but I learned that these setbacks don’t have to derail you. Thanks to my increased strength and endurance, I was able to recover more quickly from those tough moments and keep pushing forward.
“Getting Back Out There” Looks Different for Everyone
Not everyone’s recovery will look the same. You don’t have to run races or deadlift weights to “get back out there.” Maybe it’s taking a short walk, doing chair exercises, or working with your therapist on a personalized home exercise program. The point is: You can get back to doing the things you love in a way that makes sense for you.
At Four Pines Physical Therapy, our team is here to support you every step of the way, helping you set goals and achieve them. Recovery is a personal journey, but you don’t have to do it alone. Today, I may not be the fastest person in a race, but I’m in the race. And that’s what matters.
See you out there!
